Architecture
Many industry leaders, including Panorama Consulting Group, have published thoughts regarding the evasive nature of ERP benefits. Our 2008 ERP Report underscores this hypothesis. As Figure F outlines, only one out of five companies (21%) realize at least half of the business benefits they expected from their ERP systems. In addition, over half (57%) realized major operational disruptions after go-live, including the inability to ship products to customers in some cases. One a positive note, two out of three (70%) of the participants in the study were able to realize some type of staff optimization as a result of their investment in ERP.
Clearly, despite the large investment most companies make in ERP software, benefits are by no means guaranteed. In addition, the risk of ERP implementation causing a disruption to the organization’s core operations is a significant risk. These factors are clearly areas that will affect the ROI of the ERP investment and should be carefully managed as part of an overall ERP benefits realization plan.

Now that China Telecom, Telenor, Mobilink, Warid and Etisalat/PTCL’s Ufone are all in the fray, the race to keep adding features continues. After the Telenor and Mobilink mobile TV offerings, PTCL’s broaband entertainment portal and Mobilink’s bill payment services, Ufone has now come out with the UStocks mobile stock information app. This is not just about seeing quotes on a mobile-enabled web page, but a downloadable mobile app that provides streaming ticker and quote information.

I liked it because it somehow related to the trade I am. I was traveling to meet a prospective ERP implementation client. I used the review in the discussions I had that day.
The way I understand the above passage is that the architect first conceives the basic design principles of the structure. This would define the look and feeling and the mood the building would create. The details in the building would need to be in line with this framework.
MYTH: “Our project is not progressing as planned because it lacks management commitment”
FACT: Progress is often not achieved because of management burn-out. People involved can be disillusioned by promises made and expectations that were built-up by overzealous vendor reps, consultants who collect exorbitant fees as the project lingers and IT personnel who were looking for big budgets and the opportunity to rub shoulders with the “big boys.” When management is made aware of the process, and understands that there are no silver bullets in ERP or quick fixes, then expectations don’t run amok and progress can be measured in a real and meaningful fashion.
